The Sekonic Studio Deluxe Model L-28c is a legendary analog light meter produced in Japan between 1964 and 1970. It remains one of the most iconic and reliable tools for classic filmmaking and analog photography.
Battery-free operation: Powered entirely by a selenium photocell. Light exposure generates the micro-current needed to move the needle.
Incident light metering: Measures the light falling on the subject. This provides highly accurate exposures that are not fooled by dark or bright backgrounds.
Swivel head: The measuring head rotates 270 degrees. This allows you to point the sensor at the light source while easily reading the dial.
Needle lock: Features a front button that mechanically locks the needle in place for comfortable reading.
Specifications & Range
Film speed range: ISO / ASA 8 to 12,000.
Shutter speeds: 1 second to 1/2000 of a second.
Aperture range: f/1 to f/90.
Cine speeds: 8 to 128 frames per second (for motion picture cameras).
Light range: EV 4 to 17 (at ISO 100).
Buying & Maintenance Tips
Because the L-28c is decades old, selenium cells can degrade over time, especially if left exposed to light for years. Always test the meter against a known accurate digital camera or modern light meter to ensure the needle calibration is still correct.
