The Leningrad 4 is a classic, battery-free analog selenium-cell exposure meter manufactured in the USSR. Designed for both photography and cinematography, it uses an internal photoelectric cell and a matching mechanical dial to calculate accurate aperture and shutter speed combinations for ambient light.
Specifications
Light Measurement: Incident light (with opal/milk glass diffuser) and reflected light (brightness).
Cell Type: Selenium (requires no batteries).
Film Speed Range: 3 to 800 ASA / 6 to 30 DIN. Note: Export models use ASA, while domestic USSR models use GOST (4-1000 units).
Aperture Scale: f/1.4 to f/22.
Shutter Speeds: 1/1000th of a second to 15 seconds.
Cine Speeds: 8, 12, 16, 24, 32, 48, and 64 frames per second (fps).
Dimensions: Approximately 8 cm × 6 cm × 3 cm (3.1″ × 2.4″ × 1.2″).
Weight: ~125-150 grams (varies slightly with case).
Features & Workflow
Analog Needle: Features a clear, responsive needle that deflects based on light levels. Readings correspond to a number on an auxiliary scale.
Measurement Ranges: Offers two ranges for reflected light and two ranges for illumination, controlled by a slide/range switch mechanism.
Calculator Dial: To use, simply dial in your film’s ISO, align the auxiliary meter reading on the calculator ring, and read off the corresponding shutter speeds and f-stops
