Despite its wide range of focal lengths , the 28-70mm Vario-Elmar is light and compact. To keep the lens as compact as possible , the aperture is variable according to the focal length in use. At the shortest focal length of 28mm the largest aperture is f/3.5 and changes progressively to f/4.5 at the focal length of 70mm.
